Flying problems 5

780 $

This painting was created in 2023. This year I was looking for a balance between life and desire while going out, and the work turned into lively small-size paper creations.

The "Problems of Flying" series was painted in my free time at work this year. After sweating profusely every day, cherish the remaining time to fly —— choose what to eat tonight, what speed and posture to walk on the road, and count the days to meet friends and lovers.
The problem of flying is the problem of freedom, but freedom is an abstract word that exists in the imagination, while flying is a concrete problem in practice——how to take off, which direction the wind is coming from, which sky it is in, how long you have enough physical strength to fly, constant adjustments attitude and when to land.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This The Problem of Flying showcases unique artistic charm with a concise yet tension - filled picture. In terms of composition, the figure interacts with surrounding elements (such as the hanging object on the left, the ribbon behind, and the ripples under the feet). It seems loose but implies order, creating an open narrative space. The content of the picture is abstract, and the meaning of the figure’s form and attachments requires viewers’ participation in interpretation, adding artistic interactivity.

The use of colors is restrained and ingenious. The combination of light tones creates a hazy and poetic atmosphere, weakening specific images and strengthening the transmission of emotions. The painting style approaches abstract expressionism, capturing forms and verve with simple lines and generalized colors, similar to Matisse’s pursuit of “simplifying forms to reach the essence” in his late - stage paper - cut works. It uses seemingly spontaneous brushstrokes to outline the philosophical thinking about the concept of “flying”.

In terms of emotional expression, the figure’s posture and the flowing sense of the ribbon convey a yearning for freedom and transcendence. “The Problem of Flying” is not only a reverie about physical flight but also points to the exploration of the spiritual world. With such a concise yet powerful visual language, the creator invites viewers to think about the connection between “flying”, the individual, and the unknown. Within the minimalist form, it hides a positive expectation of breaking free from constraints and embracing infinite possibilities. It is a wonderful practice of using art to question the soul and expand imagination.

Why does the figure appear to lack a defined facial expression?

The face is rendered with only a few spare lines, devoid of detailed features, emphasizing an anonymized and universalized human form. This approach allows the viewer to project their own self or broader human experiences onto the figure, rather than being confined to the likeness of a specific individual.

What is the symbolic meaning of the ripple motif?

The concentric ripples beneath the figure’s feet suggest she is either floating above or lightly touching the surface of water. This conveys a state suspended between flight and descent, presence and dissolution, reinforcing the theme of unstable flight.

How do the blank spaces and muted tones function within the composition?

The expanses of blank space generate an atmosphere of lightness, transparency, and meditation. Subtle combinations of pale purple and soft gray lines give the figure a flickering, semi-visible quality, contributing to the work’s poetic quietude.

What is the significance of this work within the field of “minimalist watercolor figure painting”?

As a minimalist watercolor piece, the figure is reduced almost to a symbol, yet through color and rippling motifs it suggests a layered psychological space. In contemporary collections, works of this kind are valued as meditative and conceptual standalone pieces, appealing to collectors of minimalist watercolor and body-themed art.

In what contexts would this work be best displayed?

The piece lends itself to modern art galleries, exhibitions on minimalist painting, or personal meditation spaces. Its ethereal mood and openness to interpretation also make it well-suited for inclusion in feminist art research or philosophical explorations of the body as a visual case study.
