Flying problems 3

1680 $

This painting was created in 2023. This year I was looking for a balance between life and desire while going out, and the work turned into lively small-size paper creations.

The "Problems of Flying" series was painted in my free time at work this year. After sweating profusely every day, cherish the remaining time to fly —— choose what to eat tonight, what speed and posture to walk on the road, and count the days to meet friends and lovers.
The problem of flying is the problem of freedom, but freedom is an abstract word that exists in the imagination, while flying is a concrete problem in practice——how to take off, which direction the wind is coming from, which sky it is in, how long you have enough physical strength to fly, constant adjustments attitude and when to land.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This The Problem of Flying centers on the figure in its composition. The vertical layout concentrates the viewer’s gaze. The content is rich: the figure holds a bouquet, and there seem to be light ribbons above the head, adding a sense of fantasy. The use of colors is simple yet layered. The blue - green background creates a transparent atmosphere, echoing the soft tones of the figure’s clothing and highlighting a dreamy quality.

The painting style leans towards expressionism. The brushstrokes are free and spontaneous, not over - elaborating details, yet accurately capturing the figure’s demeanor and emotions. This creative approach is similar to the presentation of romantic imagination in Chagall’s works, blending reality and fantasy. In terms of emotional expression, through the figure’s demeanor and the ribbon elements, it conveys a yearning for freedom and the unknown. The bouquet also endows the painting with a gentle atmosphere, making the emotions have both a light - hearted reverie and a delicate warmth. The creator, utilizing the characteristics of watercolor, through the flow of colors and the rhythm of brushstrokes, constructs a unique emotional field. It enables viewers to empathize with this longing for “flying” and transcending the ordinary. It is a successful practice of conveying sincere emotions through art at the boundary between reality and fantasy.

Why does the background rely primarily on cool tones?

The work employs a broad field of blue-green hues, creating a dreamlike depth and an undertone of uncertainty. This cool palette contrasts sharply with the warmer, pinkish tones of the face, thereby accentuating the intensity of the figure’s gaze.

What is the meaning of the object held in the figure’s hands?

The figure clutches a bouquet, yet beneath the stems emerges a dark, beak-like shape. This ambiguity—flower or bird?—directly echoes the theme of “the problem of flight,” merging organic and avian symbolism into one unresolved form.

How are the feather-like elements around the head depicted?

From the crown of the head extend white, feather-like streams, simultaneously airy and flame-like. These strokes evoke the imagery of flight while reinforcing the painting’s surreal atmosphere.

What is the unique value of this painting within the field of watercolor portraiture?

It belongs to the domain of contemporary watercolor fantasy portraiture, utilizing layered transparencies of aqueous media to produce a delicate interplay of solidity and evanescence. For collectors, it appeals to enthusiasts of modern watercolor art and to small galleries specializing in thematic exhibitions, as it balances decorative allure with conceptual depth.

In what contexts is this painting especially suitable for display?

With its dreamlike and symbolic character, the work is particularly well-suited for contemporary art exhibitions, artist monographs, or contexts of feminist art collecting. Its chromatic subtlety and surreal composition also give it strong potential within the independent watercolor art market, especially for collectors drawn to female imagery and surrealist motifs.
