Flying problems

1680 $

This painting was created in 2023. This year I was looking for a balance between life and desire while going out, and the work turned into lively small-size paper creations.

The "Problems of Flying" series was painted in my free time at work this year. After sweating profusely every day, cherish the remaining time to fly —— choose what to eat tonight, what speed and posture to walk on the road, and count the days to meet friends and lovers.
The problem of flying is the problem of freedom, but freedom is an abstract word that exists in the imagination, while flying is a concrete problem in practice——how to take off, which direction the wind is coming from, which sky it is in, how long you have enough physical strength to fly, constant adjustments attitude and when to land.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This painting constructs a fantastical atmosphere with a unique artistic language. In the picture, the figure and the hazy outline of an arm are placed side by side. The figure’s gentle posture, as if lost in thought, serves as an emotional anchor. In terms of composition, the figure is on the left and the arm is hidden in the right background. It breaks symmetry yet achieves visual balance, just like different musical parts interweaving in a symphony.

The use of color is bold and harmonious. The large - scale spread of blue - green is like the cool lake water in summer, creating a dreamy base for the painting. The light gray and pink of the figure are just like the soft light on the lake surface, lighting up the vision. The painting style is a fusion of Expressionism and Surrealism. Lines and colors do not pursue precise realism; instead, they use vague and flowing forms to convey subconscious thoughts, like a dream net woven with colors and lines.

The emotional expression is subtle and profound. The expression and posture of the figure, together with the seemingly existing arm, seem to be questioning "the problem of flight" —— whether it is the desire to break free from constraints or the longing for the unknown. This emotion is like a faint light, flowing in the picture.

When it comes to similar artists, one can think of Chagall. He is good at conveying poetry with dreamy scenes and romantic colors. This painting also uses surreal combinations and lyrical colors to build a unique spiritual universe. In the blending of personal emotions and fantasy imagination, it allows viewers to step into a philosophical journey about "the problem of flight". Although there is confusion, due to the poetic presentation of art, it is full of the romance and enthusiasm of exploring the unknown, inspiring people to embrace the fantastic journey in their hearts and find the glimmer of beauty in uncertainty.

Why does the composition employ a vast field of turquoise as its background?

The turquoise ground evokes a space that is at once clear and enigmatic, reminiscent of the merging of sky and water. It situates the figure in suspension, extending the metaphor of flight as both a physical and psychological state.

What is distinctive about the figure’s posture?

With hands gently placed near the face, the posture hovers between prayer and contemplation, expressing an inward state of subtle anticipation. This gesture also suggests a ritualistic moment, akin to the quiet preparation before flight.

What does the semi-transparent form on the right signify?

The faint lavender arc resembles the trace of a wing or the afterimage of a flight path. Its incompleteness suggests not a literal object, but rather the echo of memory or the projection of imagination, enriching the painting with ambiguity.

How does the work hold value within the context of contemporary serial painting and experimental portraiture?

As both the origin and conclusion of the Problem of Flight series, this painting encapsulates its central themes while leaving them unresolved through the use of blankness and translucence. Collectors may view it as a pivotal node—an archival anchor that bridges the conceptual arc of the series, enhancing both its scholarly and artistic significance.

How can exhibition display amplify its role within the series?

Shown independently, the work is well suited to the entrance or exit of an exhibition, framing the viewer’s encounter with the series. Displayed with its companions, it resonates most powerfully when hung as the final piece, echoing the beginning and closing the cycle with contemplative symmetry.
