Flying problems 9

780 $

This painting was created in 2023. This year I was looking for a balance between life and desire while going out, and the work turned into lively small-size paper creations.

The "Problems of Flying" series was painted in my free time at work this year. After sweating profusely every day, cherish the remaining time to fly —— choose what to eat tonight, what speed and posture to walk on the road, and count the days to meet friends and lovers.
The problem of flying is the problem of freedom, but freedom is an abstract word that exists in the imagination, while flying is a concrete problem in practice——how to take off, which direction the wind is coming from, which sky it is in, how long you have enough physical strength to fly, constant adjustments attitude and when to land.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This The Problem of Flying showcases a unique exploration of “flying” through concise and powerful visual language. In terms of composition, the figure occupies the core of the painting. The stretched limbs break the conventional stillness, creating a dynamic tension field and guiding viewers to focus on the presentation of the “flying” posture. The content of the painting centers on the human form. The body outlined by lines and the exaggerated limb movements convey an abstract interpretation of the flying state, stimulating the imagination.

The use of colors is bold and distinctive. The large - area red background and the yellow human form create a strong visual impact. The collision of warm and cold tones endows the painting with vigorous vitality. The painting style approaches expressionism, simplifying the form with smooth lines and conveying emotions through color rendering, similar to the characteristic of “expressing meaning with color” in Matisse’s works. It uses intuitive visual symbols to question the essence of flying.

In terms of emotional expression, the stretched limbs and bold posture of the figure convey a yearning and attempt for free soaring. “The Problem of Flying” is not only a metaphor for physical flying skills but also points to the pursuit of breaking free from constraints at the spiritual level. With the transparency and agility of watercolor, the creator integrates the individual’s desire to explore flying into colors and lines. It enables viewers to empathize with this positive yearning for breaking through oneself and embracing the vastness in the strong visual experience. It is a vivid practice of art breaking the shackles of reality and awakening inner courage, demonstrating the power of art to empower the soul and expand the spiritual boundaries.

Why does the composition emphasize the contrast between a yellow-toned body and a red background?

The artist employs a saturated red backdrop against a semi-transparent yellow figure, creating a tension akin to flame and radiance intertwined. This chromatic opposition not only propels the figure forward but also evokes a sense of energy and spirituality.

Does the outstretched pose correspond to the theme of “flight”?

Yes. The nearly wing-like gesture reinforces the metaphor of flight. Yet, unlike traditional figurative depictions, the absence of literal wings transforms the act into an anatomical and symbolic expression, where the human body itself becomes the medium of ascent.

What is the artwork’s significance in the market for contemporary abstract figure painting?

Flight Problem No. IX stands out for its experimental red–yellow palette and for translating the flight motif into abstract corporeal imagery. Within niche contemporary collections, it is regarded as a distinctive work. Its visual impact and energetic aura also make it particularly suited for private studios or spaces that seek an atmosphere of intensity.

Why are the contours drawn in light violet rather than black or brown?

The use of violet lines ensures clarity without the rigidity of darker outlines. It preserves the figure’s structure while allowing the yellow textures to merge seamlessly with the red ground, imparting a sense of transparency and weightlessness.

Which audiences or collectors might this work appeal to?

It will resonate with collectors interested in avant-garde watercolor figure painting and expressionist approaches to the body. The painting’s fusion of the human form with the symbolic notion of flight—combined with its bold chromatic tension—grants it both aesthetic intensity and discursive value within contemporary art discourse.
