PHILO

Philo was born in eastern China and later studied more than 2,000 kilometers away in the country’s west.
This dual experience gives his work both the vitality, ruggedness, and passion of the western landscape, as well as the subtle warmth and human touch of the east.
The two qualities merge seamlessly in his art, imbuing it with a distinctive vibrancy and allure.

Philo is an artist deeply devoted to both art and life, approaching them with honesty and profound engagement.
He remains cautious of the spotlight and avoids excessive involvement in the art market.
As a result, his works are more often found in private collections than in wide circulation.
This distance from commercial pressures allows him to pursue his inner journey with clarity and integrity, delving ever deeper without distraction.

Philo was born in1998 on the east coastline of southern China.

Themes

My work is grounded in the idea and belief of "The land of humanity, and the people upon it." I begin with portraits of friends who, like me, grew up on the same land, and from there I gradually unfold a vision of the bond between human beings and nature. The people in my paintings are people within nature—their lines, forms, and colors lean toward the natural. At the same time, the nature in my work is nature as perceived through human eyes, existing within a constant dialogue with us.

Artistic Style

I usually take the human figure as the central subject, moving between realism and free expression, often in conversation with poetry and prose. I do not seek to establish a fixed or repeatable style across a series of works. Instead, I hope that the style of each painting remains in sync with the shifts in my own life, always vibrating and unsettled. For me, art must resonate with the rhythm of personal growth in order to be authentic and powerful. To create a harmony among artwork, life, and nature is a gift of genius; for ordinary people, it is something to search for carefully throughout a lifetime. I too am still on that path.

Supplement

Society shapes individuals by placing upon them a weight that nearly exceeds what each person can bear, so that we all walk with bent backs. The light, dreamlike visions of the sky can only be seen as reflections in water. The familiar heaviness on our shoulders, the fragile dreams mixed with mud and stone in roadside puddles, the ants moving steadily onward, and the strange branches that blossom with unexpected beauty—together, they form the grounded life of human beings, and they continuously shape my art as well. Now, I am trying to pour more water into those puddles, so that the sky beneath my feet can expand—wider and wider.
