Flying problems 8

780 $

This painting was created in 2023. This year I was looking for a balance between life and desire while going out, and the work turned into lively small-size paper creations.

The "Problems of Flying" series was painted in my free time at work this year. After sweating profusely every day, cherish the remaining time to fly —— choose what to eat tonight, what speed and posture to walk on the road, and count the days to meet friends and lovers.
The problem of flying is the problem of freedom, but freedom is an abstract word that exists in the imagination, while flying is a concrete problem in practice——how to take off, which direction the wind is coming from, which sky it is in, how long you have enough physical strength to fly, constant adjustments attitude and when to land.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This The Problem of Flying constructs a unique artistic world with concise and tension - filled visual language. In terms of composition, the scattered layout of figures, water waves, and birds breaks the conventional spatial logic, creating a surreal sense of flow and guiding viewers to contemplate the wonderful connection between “flying” and the environment. The content of the painting focuses on the dynamic of the human form. The stretched limbs and simple shape convey an abstract interpretation of the flying posture, stimulating imagination.

The use of colors is restrained and exquisite. The blue - and - white - based tones render a tranquil and ethereal atmosphere. The blending of water and color endows the painting with a poetic haziness. The painting style approaches abstract expressionism, outlining forms with minimalist lines and conveying emotions through color blooming, similar to the wisdom of “controlling complexity with simplicity” in Paul Klee’s works. It uses seemingly spontaneous brushstrokes to tell the exploration of the essence of flying.

In terms of emotional expression, the stretched posture of the figure and the gentle rhythm of the water waves convey a yearning for freedom and transcendence. “The Problem of Flying” is not only a philosophical thought on physical flying but also points to the pursuit of breaking free from constraints at the spiritual level. With the agility of watercolor, the creator integrates the individual’s longing for freedom into the imagery of heaven and earth. It makes viewers empathize with this positive longing for being unrestrained in the simple painting, a vivid practice of art breaking the shackles of reality and awakening inner poetry, demonstrating the power of art to inspire the soul and expand the cognitive boundaries.

Why is the figure shown with outstretched arms and crossed legs?

The posture recalls both flight and meditation. It embodies an outward gesture of openness while simultaneously suggesting inner stillness. Here, flight is transformed into a metaphor for contemplative balance, merging motion with serenity.

What is the significance of the blue waves and white background?

The undulating blue lines symbolize the uncertainty and turbulence of flight, while the expanses of white and pale blue evoke a sense of vast, tranquil space. Their contrast frames the figure’s pose as both lightweight and challenged, suspended between ease and tension.

Why does a small bird-like or aircraft-like symbol appear on the right?

This secondary motif acts as a distant counterpart to the central figure. It may represent another traveler, an alternate self, or the next stage of the flight journey, subtly extending the work’s symbolic horizon.

How does the atmosphere of this work differ from No. VII?

  • No. VII radiates a sense of playfulness, with dance-like freedom.

  • No. VIII turns inward, embodying philosophical reflection and meditative flight.

It suggests that the journey has moved beyond external expression into a state where the body, sky, waves, and mind converge.

Does this piece suggest an “answer” to the Flight Problem?

In a sense, yes. The work proposes that the resolution of flight’s dilemma lies not in exertion or control but in release and inner integration. The figure’s posture—echoing Buddhist icons or yogic meditation—suggests that the ultimate destination of flight is spiritual freedom within.
