Countless times, villagers had seen his figure there—shoulders burdened with firewood, humming an old tune as he walked. Until, one year, he never came back. They say he lingered too long at the cliff’s edge and was swept away by a sudden mountain wind.
There, between the cracks of stone, a tree took root. Its roots lie bare, clutching stubbornly to the rock, stretching downward along the face of the cliff. The trunk bends, its leaves sparse, as if struggling to breathe in the darkness. Sometimes a bird will perch on its branches, rest for a moment, then fly off again—leaving behind only the sound of the wind and a hollow echo. When villagers pass, they glance up and say the tree is the “guardian of the cliff,” left behind in place of that young man.
The years have passed. The stone path is now swallowed by weeds, yet the tree still clings to the rock face, growing on. From a distance it looks like a single leaf pressed against the vast mountain, its veins etched deep, washed constantly by night and rain, with nothing above it but an unfathomable sky.
I, too, have passed this place, and more than once I stopped to linger.
