This painting was created in 2020, the year I just graduated from college and was in a period of transition. The subject matter and style of painting continued from my college days.

Yuhua is a female artist from Kunming. She is a good friend of mine. This is a painting I created for her when I decided to leave Kunming for a long time.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

The figures are unique, with red hair, soft facial lines, intertwined with elements like the white rabbit in the arms, the bouquet beside, and flying birds. The “city” below has an abstract form, seemingly a reflection of a dream. In terms of composition, elements such as figures, animals and plants, and buildings are freely scattered yet interrelated, breaking the conventional spatial logic, constructing a surreal narrative field, and guiding viewers to explore meanings in non - linear connections.

In color application, bright tones like pink, green, and blue are dominant, weakening the contrast between light and dark, creating a fairy - tale - like light atmosphere, making the fantastical elements more appealing. The painting style is close to surrealism. With deformation and symbolic techniques, it reorganizes real objects, breaking free from the constraints of realism, and conveys thoughts at the subconscious level. The emotional expression is delicate and hazy. The tranquil expressions of the figures, the tenderness of the white rabbit, and the vitality of the flowers, integrated with the abstract city, seem to tell of the yearning for an ideal home and pure emotions. And due to the surreal presentation, the emotions take on a mysterious and dreamy quality.

For similar artists, we can think of Marc Chagall. He is good at using fantastical combinations and poetic colors to convey the inner world. In terms of the collage of surreal elements and the rendering of color emotions, this painting has a similar romantic expression. Through the weaving of seemingly disordered picture elements, it allows viewers to step into the “city” dream constructed by the creator, full of warmth and reverie, and feel the poetic reconstruction of reality by art.

Why do the figure, the white rabbit, the city, and the trees all appear together?

The juxtaposition of these elements works as a metaphor for “weaving.” The white rabbit embodies innocence and softness, while the human figure radiates a maternal or dreamlike tenderness. The trees and cityscape connect the private world of dreams with social reality. Together, they reflect the interwoven relationship between humanity, nature, and urban life.

What role does the pink tone of the figure’s hair play in the composition?

The pink hair is both gentle and powerful, linking the figure to the rabbit, flowers, and sky, like a living thread running through the canvas. Its warmth contrasts with the surrounding cool tones, making the figure the focal point of the painting and adding a lyrical sense of tension.

Why is there a net-like structure in the scene?

The white mesh structure above the figure’s head resembles woven threads, or perhaps a dream-catcher’s web. This directly echoes the title “The Woven City,” suggesting that the relationship between the city, the self, memory, and reality is like an interlacing warp and weft—woven into one living fabric.

What kind of spaces would suit the display of this work?

As a contemporary painting that blends figuration and abstraction, this piece is ideal for cultural institutions and themed exhibitions in art museums. It also suits private interiors such as studies or creative studios, where its poetic dialogue between the self and the city resonates on a deeply reflective level.

Why are the city elements placed beneath the figure?

The urban landscape lies beneath the body of the figure, as though it “grows” from her roots. This arrangement suggests that the city is not something external but an organic extension of human emotion and being. The city becomes inseparable from the figure, highlighting the idea of urban life as a living organism connected to personal identity.
