The emotion of chasing

40 x 50 cmCollect & Lost

This painting was created in 2021. I spent half of this year teaching painting and the rest of the time traveling alone. There are less paintings and more poetry creation. Most of the feelings about the works come from what I saw during my travels.

The juxtaposition and interweaving of lines and colors is one of my main painting techniques. I haven't studied this method of painting, and it changes with my feelings bad or good. This is a portrait of a simple and lovely little girl, and I also let the painting method stay at the same moment.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

Yearning and Chasing, Finding Peace in Years? focuses on a portrait, capturing the essence of youth with delicate brushstrokes. In the painting, the tied - up ponytail and loose strands by the ear are concrete symbols of youth. The color gradients in the hair (interweaving of golden brown and gray - blue) simulate the flow of light and shadow on the hair, infusing dynamic vividness into the static portrait. The layered colors on the face (blending of pink - purple and warm brown) precisely capture the texture of the skin and changes in light and shadow. The detail of the slightly parted lips conveys a subtle emotional tension.

In terms of composition, the figure occupies the core of the painting. The light - colored blending in the background acts like a hazy atmosphere filter. The abstract form on the right (resembling feathers or ribbons) is the external extension of emotions, breaking the closed nature of portrait painting and creating a spiritual connection between the figure and the environment. This layout, while focusing on the figure, reserves breathing space for emotional expression, making the portrait not just about “likeness” but also about the integration of “spirit” and “atmosphere”.

Color is a thermometer of emotions: The dominant warm brown and pink - purple tones, like the soft afternoon sun, convey the warmth of youth. The accents of gray - blue and light purple, like the coolness of a gentle breeze, balance the richness of warm tones, creating a visual experience of “transparency within warmth”. The handling of paint thickness (thin application on the face for delicacy, thick application on the hair for three - dimensionality) enhances the layers and textures of colors, making each stroke of paint a carrier of emotion.

The painting style belongs to expressive realism. It retains the capture of realistic figure features while using subjective color handling and free brushstrokes to convey inner emotions. The brushstrokes on the face are delicate yet not rigid, and those on the hair are bold yet not messy. It blends the “form” of realism with the “spirit” of expression, turning the portrait into a container of youthful emotions.

Emotions hide in colors and brushstrokes: Warm tones represent the enthusiasm of yearning, transparent colors signify the tranquility of years, and the flowing hair and slightly parted lips convey “the throbbing of youth and the longing for stability” — In the dynamics of “yearning and chasing”, there is a desire for the tranquility of “finding peace in years”. This contradictory yet harmonious emotion naturally emerges in the collision of colors and interweaving of brushstrokes.

It evokes Lucian Freud’s deep exploration of the human spirit, yet this painting has more youthful lightness. It also resembles Pierre Bonnard’s poetic creation of colors but focuses more on the emotional transmission of portraits. Using specific details of the hair and layered colors on the face, it transforms the complex emotions of youth into a touchable visual warmth, telling viewers: The charm of portrait painting lies in capturing emotional slices of a moment — When colors become annotations of emotions and brushstrokes turn into traces of youth, the passion of “yearning and chasing” and the longing for “finding peace in years” are eternally frozen on the canvas, becoming vivid footnotes of time. Every gaze allows one to feel the warmth of youth and the longing for life.

Why does the face show uneven layers of color?

The portrait alternates violet-gray, soft peach, and golden tones, creating a texture that lies somewhere between light, shadow, and emotion. This unevenness is not meant as a realistic skin tone, but as a visual expression of inner presence, reflecting the subject’s complex psychology and aura.

What is the symbolic meaning of the twin ponytails and earrings?

The hairstyle is deliberately elongated and curved into lines that almost resemble decorative patterns, while the earrings are emphasized with distinct arcs. This treatment—figurative yet leaning toward abstraction—highlights the subject’s sense of ornamentation and individuality, echoing stylistic choices found in decorative portrait painting.

What makes the color palette distinctive in this work?

It blends cool metallic hues (silver-gray, pale green) with warm, soft tones (skin-pink, lavender). The tension between warm and cool creates a gentle visual dynamism. This duality gives the work qualities of both modern decorative painting and contemporary portraiture. For collectors interested in neo-expressionist portrait art, such a piece carries not only strong visual appeal but also makes an ideal focal artwork for living spaces.

What role do the feather-like strokes in the background play?

The feathered brushstrokes behind the figure serve as both background and psychological extension, resembling a kind of floating aura. They blur the boundary between subject and environment, infusing the work with a sense of weightlessness that feels both real and surreal.

Is this painting suitable for public display?

Yes. With its light tonal quality and decorative stylization, it differs from hyper-realistic portraits and instead embodies the elegance of artistic decorative painting. It is especially suitable for studies, galleries, and cultural exhibition spaces, where it not only enhances the artistic atmosphere but also sparks aesthetic reflection, giving it cultural as well as collectible value.
