This painting was created in 2018. With the end of the sketching class this year, my sketching journey stopped at a few simple drawings for Miss Hui. Of course, my oil painting skills have also improved a lot in the past year or so, and I have carefully explored my own way of speaking.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This sketch constructs a scene of immense tension with concise yet powerful strokes.
In terms of form, the figure is rendered with delicate chiaroscuro. The undulations of muscles and the contours of bones are captured precisely, demonstrating the rigorous control of human anatomy characteristic of Albrecht Dürer's figure sketches. However, it places greater emphasis on conveying the figure's sense of weathering – the loose skin and resolute expression vividly reveal the traces of time.
The composition places the figure at the center of the picture plane. The blurred background treatment creates a strong contrast between solid and void, similar to Rembrandt van Rijn's handling of light, shadow, and space in his paintings. This highlights the figure's dominant presence, focusing the viewer's gaze on the figure's expression. Meanwhile, the faintly suggested lines in the background add a sense of mystery and narrative to the scene.

In terms of brushwork (or stroke handling), delicate hatching combines with soft smudging . This achieves both meticulous detailing of the figure and creates an overall soft atmosphere. It resembles the way Hans Holbein the Younger rendered texture and mood in his drawings, conveying the figure's inner character through refined strokes.

Regarding content and theme, the figure's posture and expression seem to narrate a past experience – perhaps the hardships of life, or an inner perseverance. The emotional expression is subtle yet profound, avoiding overt declaration. Instead, through the portrayal of the figure and the supporting background, it evokes in the viewer a complex feeling interwoven with resilience and helplessness, prompting reflection on the figure's destiny and life itself.

Recommended stylistically similar worksAlbrecht Dürer's "Praying Hands" rigorously presenting human anatomy; Rembrandt van Rijn's "Self-Portrait", using light and shadow to highlight character; Hans Holbein the Younger's "Portrait of Erasmus", employing delicate strokes to capture the sitter's essence. These can be explored alongside this sketch to delve into the depth of human emotion and artistic expression.

Q1: Why is the figure nude?

A1: In art, nudity often strips away identity, profession, and external markers, leaving only the human body in its raw form. Here, the nude outsider figure is not presented to evoke the classical ideal of beauty, but rather to reveal a condition of exposure, vulnerability, and displacement. Standing on a tower crane, his bare body contrasts sharply with the cold steel structure, symbolizing how migrant workers in urbanization are both the supporters of the city’s growth and yet isolated from its promises.

Q2: What is the symbolic meaning of the crane and the body?

A2: The tower crane represents modern construction and the towering desires of urbanization, while the human body appears heavy, fragile, and unprotected. The contrast is striking: one is cold, functional steel, the other is flesh and blood, marked by exhaustion yet dignity. This juxtaposition creates a visual tension that highlights the fragility of the individual in the face of vast industrial progress.

Q3: Why does the atmosphere feel so desolate?

A3: The background is rendered in hazy grays and whites, resembling smoke, dust, or smog—possibly alluding to construction sites or a distant city. Its lack of concrete detail intensifies the sense of displacement and rootlessness. The figure stands high above, but there is no horizon that truly belongs to him. This empty space conveys the estrangement of an outsider in the city.

Q4: What is the emotional core of the painting?

A4: At its heart, this work speaks of the loneliness and resilience of the marginalized. The man stands upright, his muscles tense, his posture resolute—yet his gaze drifts toward the distance, carrying an air of defiance and uncertainty. The painting communicates not softness, but weight, endurance, and a direct confrontation with reality. It is a powerful example of contemporary figurative art exploring the human cost of urban transformation.
