Yingqiu college

This painting was created in 2017. This year I spent more time thinking about art in sketching courses, which also caused a disconnect between my color painting and sketching. I am more bold in looking for the core of Chinese culture in sketches, even though I still know very little about traditional Chinese culture. However, I am more conservative when it comes to color painting.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

In terms of modeling, trees and buildings outline the contours with simple lines, abandoning cumbersome details and pursuing the essential refinement of forms. It quite resembles the grasp of object structures in Cézanne's sketches, constructing spatial order with concise brushwork intentions.

The composition creates layers through the scattered arrangement of trees. The building is hidden behind the trees, forming a rhythm of “concealment and revelation”. Similar to the layout of the integration of nature and humanity in Corot's landscape sketches, it gives the picture an implicit narrative quality. The color is only distinguished by the gray scale of the pencil. Light and shadow are shaped through the density of line - laying. Light gray lays out to create a soft atmosphere, and dark gray depicts tree shadows and building contours, showing the charm of “a single color contains all phenomena” in sketch.

The brushwork is loose and spontaneous. The lines are either light or heavy, either sparse or dense. For example, the flexible outline of tree branches and the gentle line - laying on the building walls convey the creator's intuitive perception of the scene. The content focuses on a corner of the campus. The theme anchors the poetry in daily life. Through the interweaving of trees and buildings, it tells the delicate perception of the campus scenery. The emotion is hidden in the gradual change of gray scale. It is the artistic sublimation of ordinary scenes. In sketch creation, it continues to explore the expression of “poeticization of scenery”, allowing viewers to touch the quiet campus warmth within the simple lines.

  • Sketch Manuscript of Corot’s Recollections of Montmartre: With gentle brushstrokes and implicit composition, it integrates natural poetry into the picture, sharing the quiet sense of landscape narrative with this work.

  • Still - life Sketches by Cézanne: Grasp the essential nature of object structures through simple lines, which is consistent with the refining idea of modeling in this painting. Both explore the essence with simplicity.

Q1: What kind of scene does this artwork depict?

A1: The drawing presents a quiet corner with tall trees and a background building. Interlaced branches and soft, diffused light create the feeling of a campus or courtyard setting.

Q2: What is distinctive about the artistic technique?

A2: Executed in pencil sketch, the work uses simple, economical lines and broad areas of shading achieved through gentle smudging. This approach allows the trees and architecture to appear subtle and slightly veiled.

Q3: Why is the piece titled “Yingqiu college”?

A3: The title suggests a sketch of a courtyard in autumn light. Although the scene does not explicitly show autumn colors, the sparse lines and calm atmosphere evoke a sense of seasonal tranquility.

Q4: What kind of mood does the work convey?

A4: The piece radiates a quiet, understated elegance. Instead of dense detail, it captures a fleeting impression, leaving space for poetic ambiguity and contemplative silence.

Q5: What is the significance of sketching in the artist’s practice?

A5: For the artist, sketching is not only a way to practice form and composition, but also a method of sensitive observation and capturing the atmosphere of a moment. Unlike the heavier narrative of oil painting, this work reveals the artist’s ability to record and express with lightness and immediacy.
