Portrait sketching exercises

This painting was created in 2017. This year I spent more time thinking about art in sketching courses, which also caused a disconnect between my color painting and sketching. I am more bold in looking for the core of Chinese culture in sketches, even though I still know very little about traditional Chinese culture. However, I am more conservative when it comes to color painting.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This sketch portrait builds artistic tension with solid realistic skills. In terms of modeling, it accurately captures the undulations of the bones and muscles of the old man’s head. Similar to Pietro Annigoni’s strict control of the body structure in sketches, it restores the real texture with delicate brushstrokes. Wrinkles and sideburns all hide the traces of time.

The composition focuses on the side profile of the head, simple yet impactful. The blank background makes the viewer’s eyes lock on the figure’s face. Just like Hans Holbein’s portrait paintings, it conveys the spiritual weight with the pure presentation of the figure.

The brushwork combines lining and rubbing. Delicate brushstrokes depict the skin texture. The rough parts show the mottled years, and the flexible parts hide the warmth of painting. It can be compared to the brushstroke rhythm in Nicolai Fechin’s sketches, weaving emotions with lines.

The content is a gaze at an individual life, and the theme focuses on the expression precipitated by time. Through precise modeling and delicate brushstrokes, it conveys the calmness and tenacity of the old man after experiencing vicissitudes. Emotions are hidden in the folds of the facial lines, allowing viewers to empathize with the heaviness of life and the deep - rooted artistic observation of human nature in the realistic mirror.

Q1: Why does this portrait depict the subject in profile?

A side view clearly reveals defining features such as the nose bridge, lips, and jawline, while emphasizing the uniqueness of the contour. The profile composition also directs the viewer’s attention to the facial structure and character study.

Q2: How do the tonal lines capture the texture of aged skin?

Dense cross-hatching builds the wrinkles and shadows of the face, especially around the eyes, cheekbones, and jaw. The compact short strokes give the skin a sense of thickness and authenticity, echoing the marks of time.

Q3: Why are the hair and collar treated with so much blank space?

The artist intentionally reduces detail in the hair and clothing, using only sparse strokes as suggestion. This contrast between fullness and emptiness keeps the visual focus firmly on the face, highlighting its distinctive features.

Q4: How does this portrait differ from the minimalist gesture sketches?

While gesture sketches aim to capture movement with just a few strokes, this portrait emphasizes structure, light, and texture through deeper modeling. It functions more as a study in refined rendering than in spontaneous motion.

Q5: How does the work convey the sitter’s spirit and character?

The tight lips, slightly lifted jaw, and focused gaze suggest steadiness and resilience. The heavy, layered hatching reinforces a sense of life experience, giving the portrait a quiet strength shaped by time.
