Urban scene in architecture8

980 $

This painting was created in 2020, the year I just graduated from college and was in a period of transition. The subject matter and style of painting continued from my college days.

The reference pictures for the series "Urban scene in architecture" all come from selfies taken by several of my friends. My friends and I met in the early days of "urban construction," and when I painted them, they were all hastily building themselves along with the urbanization process. This is the era I live in and the path that our peers in the same situation must take.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

In terms of content, details such as the curliness of the hair and the folds of the clothing are accurately presented through brushstrokes. The natural and relaxed posture of the figure conveys the authenticity of a daily moment. In terms of composition, the tilted angle of the figure breaks the conventional balance. The blurred buildings and furnishings in the background form a spatial extension, making the figure a medium for the dialogue between the painting and reality.

The use of color is close to reality. The warm brown of the skin, the off - white of the clothing, and the gray tones of the background and the variegated colors of the furnishings build a color hierarchy. It not only restores the texture of life but also distinguishes the subject from the environment through differences in color warmth and purity. The painting style combines realism and expressiveness. On the basis of solid modeling, it uses slightly loose brushstrokes to retain the painterliness, similar to Lucian Freud's capture of the inner spirit and physical texture of figures. However, this work emphasizes the interception of daily scenes more, and through the figure's expression (such as the gaze), it conveys the individual's lonely contemplation and self - dialogue in the urban architectural space.

Emotions are hidden in details: The figure's eyes and slightly open lips seem to be "self - questioning and answering". The blur and complexity of the background architectural furnishings symbolize the hustle and bustle and disorder of the urban environment. The interweaving of the two places the individual in the urban context and explores the spiritual undercurrent beneath the daily appearance. By controlling the figure's posture, color hierarchy, and brushstroke texture, it allows viewers to touch the emotional folds of the individual in urban life through the seemingly ordinary portrait and experience the moment of existence and thinking that the artist has frozen with the brush.

Why do the subject’s eyes appear so complex?

The woman gazes slightly upward, meeting the viewer with an expression that is both calm and faintly questioning. Her look functions like a self-dialogue, as though she is conversing with herself while simultaneously drawing the viewer into her inner reflection.

Why did the artist choose a gray, muted tone for the background?

The dark gray background, loose and slightly chaotic, contrasts with the subject’s white clothing. This gray space works as a metaphor for the city, blurry yet heavy with pressure. Against this backdrop, the woman’s thoughts feel distant and isolated, reinforcing the painting’s urban context.

How do realism and abstraction intertwine in this painting?

While the face and clothing are rendered with realistic detail, the flowing brushstrokes introduce a sense of emotional instability. In the background, compressed shapes resembling architectural or geometric forms emerge, hinting at urban symbolism. This interplay between realism and abstraction captures the tension of identity in the city space.

Why does the figure’s posture create an “uneasy closeness”?

Her body leans slightly to the side, relaxed yet never fully at ease. By staring directly at the viewer, she closes the distance, but her cool expression maintains a sense of separation. The result is a powerful tension between intimacy and detachment.

What makes this artwork valuable from a collecting perspective?

This piece blends realist portraiture with contemporary psychological metaphor, making it highly relevant to modern art collecting. It stands as both a symbol of female self-narrative and a direct record of how urban environments shape personal psychology. Collectors can recognize in it timeless themes—loneliness, self-dialogue, and identity—that give the painting lasting cultural and market significance.
