Red earth

780 $

This painting was created in 2018. With the end of the sketching class this year, my sketching journey stopped at a few simple drawings for Miss Hui. Of course, my oil painting skills have also improved a lot in the past year or so, and I have carefully explored my own way of speaking.

This year, several landscape paintings were created while sketching in the countryside of Shilin County. This period of sketching was a breakthrough and a period of qualitative change in my painting. The coordination between the scene and the canvas, the combination of humanity and light and color, and the indescribable life. In short, it has planted a lot in my life.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This Red Earth uses rich colors and unrestrained brushstrokes to paint a unique scene among mountains and fields. In terms of modeling, mountains, fields, and villages are all presented with generalized color blocks, abandoning fine realism. It seems to be in the same vein as Cézanne's exploration of “essential modeling” —— Cézanne reconstructed nature with geometric blocks, while this work outlines the contours of mountains and fields with color blocks, capturing the majestic momentum of landscapes, weakening concrete details, and strengthening the overall perception.

The composition follows the traditional “lofty and distant” landscape structure. The red - earth path in the foreground, the lake and pastoral in the middle ground, and the layered mountains and sea of clouds in the distant view progress layer by layer. Just like Fan Kuan's Travelers Among Mountains and Streams, it constructs a vertical spatial order. However, Fan Kuan's brushwork is cold and heavy, while this work uses bright colors and agile brushstrokes to endow the landscape with more lively vitality. The color application is highly tension - filled. The warm and bright red earth, the deep blue of the lake, the dark green of the mountains, and the gray - white of the clouds collide and blend. It is like Monet's capture of light and color in the Haystacks series. However, Monet focuses on instant light and shadow, while this work is more persistent in the subjective harmonization of regional colors, telling the unique temperament of the red - earth land with intense color blocks.

In terms of brushwork, thick coating and sweeping brushstrokes are combined: the thick paint stacking on the mountains creates a majestic texture, and the sweeping brushstrokes on the paths and vegetation bring out an agile rhythm, echoing the emotional expressiveness of brushstrokes in Van Gogh's landscape paintings —— Van Gogh expressed the passion of life with rotating brushstrokes, while this work conveys the free and wild charm of mountains and fields with free brushstrokes. The content focuses on the pastoral landscape nourished by red earth, and the theme anchors “the praise of the life of the land”. The enthusiasm of colors and the extension of the composition are all praising the vitality nurtured by the red - earth land. The emotion is hidden in the collision of color blocks and the rhythm of brushstrokes, a deep gaze at nature and the land. In contemporary landscape creation, it integrates modernist color concepts and traditional landscape composition, continuing the eternal writing of “the poetic charm of the earth”.
