This painting was created in 2018. With the end of the sketching class this year, my sketching journey stopped at a few simple drawings for Miss Hui. Of course, my oil painting skills have also improved a lot in the past year or so, and I have carefully explored my own way of speaking.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This Stone Village in Guishan uses implicit brushstrokes and gentle colors to render the quiet poetry of the mountain village. In terms of modeling, houses, trees, and mountains are all presented with soft blocks and outlines, abandoning sharp realistic lines. It is quite similar to the “hazy realism” characteristic in Corot's landscape paintings —— Corot creates a dreamy atmosphere with thin coating, while this work uses blurred modeling boundaries to convey the implicit warmth of the countryside, making the objects evoke the viewer's hazy reverie of the pastoral in a state between resemblance and non - resemblance.

The composition follows the “profound” spatial principle. The vegetation in the foreground, the village in the middle ground, and the mountains in the distant view are nested layer by layer. Just like Dong Yuan's Xiaoxiang Tu, it constructs a distant landscape order. However, Dong Yuan's brushwork is delicate and meticulous, while this work simplifies details with relaxed brushstrokes, showing the simplicity and spontaneity of the village more. The color application focuses on “low - saturation harmony”. The earth - yellow houses, dark - green trees, and gray - blue sky blend naturally in color. It seems to be inspired by the “color smoky ” in Monet's late Water Lilies series. However, Monet focuses on the change of light and shadow, while this work is persistent in the gentle layout of the original rural colors, using light and elegant tones to render the quiet daily life of the stone village.

In terms of brushwork, thin coating and rubbing are combined: the thin coating on the houses reveals the breath of the canvas base, and the rubbing on the vegetation creates a hazy sense of hierarchy, echoing the pursuit of “capturing the authenticity of nature” by the Barbizon School —— like the forest in Rousseau's paintings, it conveys the natural temperature with simple brushstrokes. This work uses soft brushstrokes to render the village, making the rural atmosphere permeate through the picture. The content focuses on the stone village at the foot of Guishan Mountain. The blurred modeling and gentle colors are all protecting the tranquility and simplicity of the village. The emotion is hidden in the relaxation of brushstrokes and the softness of tones, a deep freeze - frame of the slow rural life. In contemporary landscape creation, it integrates the artistic conception of Oriental landscapes and Western realistic brushstrokes, continuing the eternal attachment to “pastoral idylls”.
