This painting was created in 2017. This year I spent more time thinking about art in sketching courses, which also caused a disconnect between my color painting and sketching. I am more bold in looking for the core of Chinese culture in sketches, even though I still know very little about traditional Chinese culture. However, I am more conservative when it comes to color painting.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

This black-and-white woodcut, The Little Prince, builds a fantastical cosmic landscape with highly impactful visual language. Stylistically, celestial bodies, characters, and other forms are delineated with simplified planes and crisp lines. The figure of the Little Prince is condensed and succinct, fitting the bold, rugged texture intrinsic to woodcut art. This simplicity in form resonates with the unadorned figures in Käthe Kollwitz's prints, conveying profound meaning through minimalism.

The composition breaks free from conventional order. Planets and light rays radiate outward, creating a sense of cosmic chaos and the unknown. This approach boldly reconstructs space, akin to Expressionist works, imbuing the image with intense visual tension. Restricted to black and white, the artist nonetheless expands layers through stark contrast. The interplay of deep blacks and bright whites, like intertwining light and shadow, intensifies the mysterious atmosphere of the cosmos, masterfully demonstrating the woodcut principle of "achieving complexity through simplicity".

In the application of the knife (a translation of brushwork logic), the carving marks are bold and rhythmically clear. Lines vary in density, from dense to sparse. Details like planetary textures and radiating light rays gain power through the knife strokes, conveying the creator's contemplation of the universe and childhood innocence. The content revolves around the Little Prince's cosmic encounters, using a childlike perspective to probe vast universal themes. Emotions are subtly woven into the black-and-white narrative – encompassing a naive curiosity about the unknown and the purity of steadfastness amidst loneliness. It represents a fusion of individual feeling and cosmic philosophy, offering a unique interpretation of the classic IP through the language of woodcut.

Q1: What is the central image of the artwork?

A1: At the center stands a silhouette of a “prince-like” figure, positioned before a large circular moon or planet. Surrounding him are scattered celestial bodies, orbital paths, and radiant beams of light, together creating a cosmic background.

Q2: Why was the black-and-white woodcut style chosen?

A2: The woodcut technique amplifies the contrast between light and shadow, giving the subject a stronger sense of power and intensity. The interplay of dense carved lines and deliberate areas of white space produces a dynamic visual explosion.

Q3: What are the symbolic elements in the composition?

A3: The encircling planets, radiating starlight, and the animal figures that appear to be listening can all be read as symbols of the “prince” engaging in a dialogue with the universe.

Q4: What kind of emotional atmosphere does the work convey?

A4: The artwork communicates a dual emotion: a sense of loneliness—the figure appears small within the vastness of the cosmos; and a sense of romanticism—as though he is an explorer or guardian of the universe, carrying a poetic mission.

Q5: How can this work be connected to The Little Prince?

A5: The title “Prince” naturally evokes associations with The Little Prince. The imagery of planets and cosmic space echoes the story’s themes of interplanetary travel, reflection on life, and the search for love, deepening the symbolic resonance of the piece.
