Clouds smoke rain

780 $

This painting was created in 2018. With the end of the sketching class this year, my sketching journey stopped at a few simple drawings for Miss Hui. Of course, my oil painting skills have also improved a lot in the past year or so, and I have carefully explored my own way of speaking.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

In terms of form, houses, trees, and distant mountains are all shaped with simple blocks. Abandoning fine realism, they precisely capture the morphological characteristics. The outlines of the houses are simple and unadorned, the trees show vitality with fluffy brushstrokes, and the distant mountains loomed hazily in the light ink - like tones. It is similar to how Monet generalized the scenery in Impression, Sunrise, capturing the instant impression with simplicity.

In terms of composition, the painting is laid out with a scattered perspective. The houses are scattered, the trees are interspersed, and the distant mountains lie across the sky, creating a profound space. This layout is similar to the “far - reaching method” in traditional Chinese landscape painting, breaking the focus constraint and allowing the viewer’s eyes to wander with the scenery, feeling the extension and layers of nature.

Color is a highlight. In the grayish background, the warm brown of the houses and the green tones of the trees interweave, like an old dream covered with a thin veil. The low - saturation tones convey a quiet and moist atmosphere, conforming to the hazy artistic conception of “cloud, mist, rain”. It can be compared to the soft and implicit color layers in Corot’s landscape paintings, using colors to render emotions.

The brushwork is spontaneous without losing order. Either thickly applied or thinly smeared, the agility of the tree branches and leaves and the simplicity of the house walls are all presented through the texture of the brushstrokes. Just as Van Gogh’s brushstrokes have a strong emotional outburst, the brushstrokes of this work are a gentle narration, touching the texture of the countryside with delicacy.

In terms of content and theme, the painting uses the daily scenery of the countryside to convey the attachment to nature and homeland. The clouds, mists, and drizzle blur the boundaries of reality, elevating the ordinary countryside into a carrier of poetry, just like Millet’s affectionate gaze at the countryside in his paintings, touching the soul with simple scenes.

The emotional expression is implicit and profound. The pervading haziness is the light smoke of homesickness and the yearning for the authenticity of nature. Among the tones and brushstrokes, viewers can perceive the painter’s cherish for the quiet countryside, as if being drawn into a gentle dream, temporarily leaving the hustle and bustle and returning to the inner pastoral.

Recommended Works

  • Corot’s Souvenir de Mortefontaine: Similarly, it conveys nostalgia and tranquility with hazy tones and natural scenery. The morning mist and woods in Corot’s painting, like the misty countryside in this work, both touch the soul with poetry.

  • Monet’s Haystacks series: Reshaping the scenery through different light and color atmospheres, it is similar to this work in creating a unique artistic conception with “cloud, mist, rain”. Both explore the emotional connection between nature and light and shadow.

Q1: What kind of atmosphere does the painting create?

A1: The scene is veiled in light mist and gentle rain, with mountains half-concealed and village houses partly hidden among lush trees. The overall mood is humid, hazy, and tranquil, evoking the cool freshness of rain-soaked earth and mossy rooftops.

Q2: What stands out about the use of color?

A2: The palette revolves around greens, earthy yellows, and soft grays, blending warm and cool tones seamlessly. The misty gray sky echoes the verdant foliage, creating both a poetic distance and a sense of lived-in reality.

Q3: How is the composition structured?

A3: The painting unfolds in three layers: rooftops and branches in the foreground, clusters of trees and houses in the middle ground, and mist-covered mountains in the distance. This tiered composition gives the work depth, as if leading the viewer step by step into the mountain village.

Q4: Where does the artistic charm of this work lie?

A4: Instead of relying on dramatic contrasts or bold colors, the painting captivates through subtle atmosphere and refined tonal transitions. It conveys the poetic beauty of a Chinese village in “mist and rain,” resonating with the spirit of traditional literati painting, yet rendered with the texture and realism of oil painting.

Q5: In what kind of space would this work be best displayed?

A5: This rain-drenched village scene, infused with the charm of Jiangnan landscapes, is especially suited for studies, living rooms, or tea rooms. It brings a calm, poetic ambiance to interiors, creating a serene environment for reflection and rest.
