Old rain2

This painting was created in 2018. With the end of the sketching class this year, my sketching journey stopped at a few simple drawings for Miss Hui. Of course, my oil painting skills have also improved a lot in the past year or so, and I have carefully explored my own way of speaking.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

Old Rain outlines an appealing scene with a unique artistic language. In terms of form, the figure's outline is not meticulously realistic; instead, it is shaped with relaxed brushstrokes. The folds of the clothes naturally extend with the body posture, weakening distinct edges and blending hazily with the background. It is similar to the emphasis on the generalization and rhythm of forms in the figure paintings of Amedeo Modigliani, but with an added touch of an ethereal atmosphere.

In terms of composition, the figure serves as a visual anchor, placed slightly to the left of the picture, with the right side echoing the sky and water surface in the background to create a spatial correspondence. The layout of lightning, clouds, and water in the background breaks the conventional sense of stability, creating a turbulent yet subtle tension. It can be compared to the spatial creation of lonely situations in the works of Edward Hopper. However, it lacks the cold hardness of urban loneliness and has more of the softness of emotional flow.

In terms of color, low - saturation tones are used. The gray sky, dark - toned clothes, and cold - glowing water construct a gloomy yet delicate color system. The colors permeate and tint each other without strong conflicts. Yet, within the subtle color differences, complex moods are conveyed. Just like the private atmosphere woven by colors in the paintings of Édouard Vuillard, it immerses the viewer in a specific emotional field.

The brushwork is spontaneous and rhythmic. Either thickly applied to create texture or thinly dyed to produce a hazy effect, the traces of the brushstrokes become symbols of externalized emotions, as if writing the inner whispers. It is similar to the exploration of the freedom of brushstrokes in the later period of Edgar Degas, but more inclined to the implicit lyricism of Oriental freehand brushwork.

In terms of content and theme, by using the image of "old rain", the figure stands in a situation where the wind and rain are about to come or have just stopped, gazing and recalling past emotions and memories. The emotional expression is implicit and profound, not directly revealed. Yet, through elements such as form and color, the viewer perceives the interweaving of complex moods such as loneliness and nostalgia, like the evening rain tapping on the window, quietly seeping into the bottom of the heart.

Recommended works with similar styles: Woman with a Black Tie by Modigliani, Nighthawks by Hopper, and Interiors by Vuillard. From these works, one can feel the charm of the interweaving of similar emotional atmospheres and artistic handling techniques.

Q1: Why are the figure’s eyes closed?

A1: The figure closes her eyes in the storm, as if shutting out the noise and danger of the outside world. This gesture places her in a state of inner contemplation and self-sheltering, conveying both tranquility and vulnerability to the viewer.

Q2: What is the symbolic meaning of the lightning and sky?

A2: The lightning cuts through the gray-blue sky like a sudden rupture or a scar of memory. It symbolizes unrest, upheaval, and fate, standing in sharp contrast to the figure’s calm posture and thereby intensifying the painting’s tension.

Q3: Why does the red railing stand out so strongly?

A3: The red railing appears striking against the cool gray background. It may function as a real safety barrier, yet also as a metaphorical boundary—separating the figure from the vastness of the world. It invites reflection on the dual meanings of protection and isolation.

Q4: What kind of atmosphere does the painting evoke?

A4: Old Rain II juxtaposes storm, lightning, and the figure, creating a contrast of external turmoil versus inner silence. The scene carries both an apocalyptic tension and a meditative stillness, as if reminding us that even in the midst of storms, one can choose to close their eyes and feel rather than resist.

Q5: How can the title “Old Rain” be understood?

A5: “Old Rain” may refer to storms of the past, but it also alludes to old acquaintances or lingering memories. The painting blends natural weather with emotional metaphor, making “rain” both an external phenomenon and an inner symbol.
