Games in the forest

This painting was created in 2017. This year I spent more time thinking about art in sketching courses, which also caused a disconnect between my color painting and sketching. I am more bold in looking for the core of Chinese culture in sketches, even though I still know very little about traditional Chinese culture. However, I am more conservative when it comes to color painting.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

The composition follows the logic of natural scattered points. The figure is placed on a forest path, with trees and stones scattered, creating an immersive forest atmosphere. Just like Camille Corot’s landscape paintings, through the dense and sparse arrangement of natural elements, it guides the viewer’s eyes to focus on the childlike moment.

The color uses low - saturated warm tones, with the blending of gray - pink and light brown, similar to the hazy rendering in Claude Monet’s late Water Lilies series. It covers the forest with a dreamy filter, weakening the real boundaries, strengthening the poetic atmosphere, and conveying the tenderness and tranquility of nature.

The brushwork is flexible and rhythmic, combining thin coating and thick stacking. The lightness of the leaves and the heaviness of the land are both presented. Comparable to John Singer Sargent’s free brushstrokes in landscape sketches, it uses the layering and splashing of pigments to record the vitality of nature and the energy of the child.

Q1: What kind of environment is the figure set in?

A1: The subject is placed along a woodland path, surrounded by wild grass, stones, and branches. The setting conveys a slightly untamed, natural atmosphere that is still full of vitality and life.

Q2: How do the color choices shape the atmosphere?

A2: The palette is dominated by soft grays, dusty pinks, light browns, and sky blues. These tones evoke both the melancholic feeling of autumn and the warmth of gentle light, creating a mood that is tranquil yet tender.

Q3: What is distinctive about the brushwork?

A3: The trees and ground are painted with quick, skipping strokes, giving them a loose, spontaneous energy. In contrast, the figure is rendered with more focused detail, clearly emphasizing the subject as the centerpiece of the composition.

Q4: How does the artwork express the theme of “play”?

A4: The child’s casual movement with a branch in hand suggests a state of imaginative exploration and playful curiosity, filling the scene with a sense of innocence and carefree joy.

Q5: How is a sense of space and depth created?

A5: By layering foreground elements such as stones and branches, placing the figure in the middle ground, and adding overlapping trees in the background, the artist builds a progressive depth of perspective that draws the viewer into the scene as if standing within it.
