Flowers blooming on the windowsill2

This painting was created in 2018. With the end of the sketching class this year, my sketching journey stopped at a few simple drawings for Miss Hui. Of course, my oil painting skills have also improved a lot in the past year or so, and I have carefully explored my own way of speaking.

Creative themes and style |   My works revolve around the creative concept of  "The land of humanity, People on the land". The people in the painting are people in nature, and the lines, shapes, and colors are close to nature. The nature in the painting is nature in the eyes of humans, existing in interaction with humans.I don’t pursue a series of works with a fixed and continuous style. I hope that the style of the pictures will synchronize with the changes in my life and always remain oscillating. The performance of the work must be in sync with the development of one's own life in order to be Sincere and powerful. Ideas are later.

Artwork Interpretation

In terms of modeling, the depiction of the character's face and hands is delicate and realistic. The lightness of the hair and the soft texture of the plush clothing are stacked layer by layer through brushstrokes. It not only has the persistent capture of human body texture in Freud's portraits but also breaks the conventional viewing logic with the inverted form, endowing the familiar human figure with the artistic tension of defamiliarization.

In terms of brushwork, thick coating and thin painting are cleverly balanced: the thin coating on the facial skin retains the delicate luster, and the thick paint stacking on the plush clothing strengthens the touch. This technique echoes the characteristic of “tactile brushstrokes” in Arikha's paintings, conveying the dual temperatures of matter and spirit through brushstrokes. The content focuses on the inverted character image, and the theme coincides with “self - examination and inner monologue”. The closed - eye posture and the fingers gently touching the cheek seem to isolate the external noise and immerse in private thoughts. The emotion is hidden in the inverted space and soft colors, a poetic exploration of the individual's inner world. In contemporary portrait creation, it integrates surreal deconstruction and realistic texture, continuing modernism's exploration of “unconventional perspectives” and also injecting a new dimension of emotional interpretation into portrait paintings.

Recommended Similar Works

  • Freud's The Sleeping Benefits Supervisor: Captures the texture of the human body with extreme realism, sharing the obsession with “true touch” with this work. Although the perspective is conventional, it also explores the privacy of human nature.

  • Chagall's Birthday: Deconstructs daily life with a surreal space, consistent with the inverted composition logic of this painting, releasing emotional poetry through an unconventional perspective.

  • Morandi's Still Life series: Creates a quiet atmosphere with low - saturation colors, corresponding to the color subtractive aesthetics of this work, both using plain colors to carry profound emotions.

Q1: Why does the figure’s expression appear especially calm and gentle?

A1: The figure’s eyes are softly closed, with a faint smile at the corners of the mouth, while the fingers lightly touch the chin—capturing a moment of inner contentment. This expression radiates serenity and intimacy, like a tender inner monologue.

Q2: What is unique about the treatment of hair color in the painting?

A2: The strands of hair carry a soft peach-pink hue that transitions naturally into the skin tones, while contrasting with the deep green background. The interplay of warmth and coolness enriches the emotional depth of the composition.

Q3: Why are the brushstrokes of the clothing different from the rendering of the skin?

A3: The clothing is painted with loose, textured strokes, almost like soft fabric brushed on the canvas, while the face and hands are rendered with delicate smoothness. This contrast highlights the subtle expression of the figure, aligning with the traits of contemporary portrait oil painting, which adds to its collectible value.

Q4: How does the treatment of background color blocks affect the figure’s presence?

A4: The background consists of mottled deep green and brown blocks, without clear spatial definition—like a hazy curtain framing the figure. This creates an atmosphere that directs all focus onto the facial expression, making the figure’s tranquil aura even more pronounced.

Q5: How does the overall atmosphere convey a unique artistic quality?

A5: With the figure smiling in quiet contemplation and the tones radiating warmth and calmness, the painting captures a poetic moment of everyday life. Its simple composition and refined details make it highly suitable for art display as well as private art collection.
